We continue to host our slams virtually.

We'll host our February 16 story slam via Zoom. The theme is EMBARRASSING MOMENTS, and our MC for the evening will be Steve Clark.

There is no charge to register. The event is pay-what-you-can; we will gratefully accept contributions via Venmo during the event and put them toward future events, but a donation is not required to attend and enjoy the virtual slam.

You must register in order to attend. Once you register, we'll send you a confirmation email that includes the link to watch on February 16. We will begin promptly at a 7 pm that evening. You'll click the link at the scheduled time from your laptop, tablet, or phone to join the call. You may wish to download the Zoom app if you don’t already have it, but it is not necessary to participate – if you don’t have it, the call will launch in your web browser. The app does give you access to more features, like voting for your favorite storyteller at the end of the evening.

And don't worry, we can't see attendees - only the storytellers are on the screen. Join us for an evening of live storytelling, from the comfort of your home. Register now, and you'll receive your own unique link to tune in that evening.

Storyteller sign-ups will remain open until we have eight storytellers, or until noon on February 15 (whichever happens first).

Clean Slate, Starting Over, Turning the Page

The theme for our January story slam was FRESH START and featured eight storytellers. We heard stories about career changes, home renovation projects, and even one about an astronaut’s mother. Our MC for the evening was Philip Given. The evening resulted in a tie between Mark Lentz and Edward Vasta.

Thanks to KBG’s generous support, we get to continue our programming amid the current circumstances, and we get to share stories told at our events throughout the year - all stories are recorded and posted to our YouTube channel, and a selection of stories from each event are featured on our monthly podcast. Thank you to KBG for your continuing partnership.

Save the date for our February 16 story slam. The theme is EMBARRASSING MOMENTS. Registration will open soon for audience and storytellers. Make sure you’re signed up for our newsletter so you’ll be the first to know.

2021 Series Kicks Off January 19

Screen Shot 2020-07-21 at 6.57.30 PM.png

We had a great evening at our Grand Slam in November, and now we're excited to kick off our sixth season of live storytelling.

We’ll continue to host our slams virtually until further notice.

We hope you’ll join us on the third Tuesday of each month throughout 2021 - we’ve announced our themes for the year.

Our first Story Slam of the year is scheduled for Tuesday, January 19. The theme is FRESH START and Philip Given will be our MC.

There is no charge to register or attend. We will gratefully accept voluntary contributions via Venmo during the event and put them toward future events.

You must register in order to attend. Once you register, we'll send you a confirmation email that includes the link to watch on January 19. We will begin promptly at a 7 pm that evening. You'll click the link at the scheduled time from your laptop, tablet, or phone to join the call. And don't worry, we can't see attendees - only the storytellers are on the screen. Join us for an evening of live storytelling, from the comfort of your home. Register now, and you'll receive your own unique link to tune in that evening.

We are also pleased to announce that we’re once again partnering with the Cultural Alliance of York County for our January event. The Cultural Alliance of York County will host their annual CelebrateArts week of free cultural events January 18-23, 2021, both online and in real life. “Choose Your Own Adventure” throughout the week by livestreaming concerts from home, taking walks to see York’s beautiful murals, or taking an online art class. CelebrateArts was created by the Cultural Alliance of York County and their cultural partners to show the importance and impact that high quality arts experiences have on the health and vibrancy of our community.  We understand now more than ever the vital importance that the arts play in our lives. Visit culturalyork.org for information and a complete listing of activities.

As part of this weeklong celebration, the Cultural Alliance typically foots the bill for tickets to the January York Story Slam so that people can attend for free. This means the tickets “sell out” within about an hour every year. But here’s another silver lining to going virtual - we have unlimited space and won’t have to turn anyone away who wants to attend this year!

Stories: The Gifts That Keep On Giving

Congratulations to Rachel Palepale, who won our 2020 Grand Slam. Rachel competed with the other winners from this year's monthly open mic story slams and earned the title of Best Storyteller in York. The theme for the evening was GIFTS.

If you missed the livestream event, you can watch the recording by clicking here.

We'd like to extend huge thanks to KBG Injury Law for sponsoring our 2020 season (and renewing for 2021 - HOORAY!). We are also grateful to the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, who have hosted all five of our annual Grand Slams in the beautiful Capitol Theatre.

Thank you to everyone who showed up this year to listen, and everyone who bravely put their names into the hat to share stories.

2020 is our fifth season of live storytelling. Since 2016, we’ve welcomed more than 3,700 attendees and have had about 570 names in the hat. That’s 570 true, personal stories shared with neighbors – friends, acquaintances, and strangers – in the safe space York Story Slam provides. Storytelling is a wonderful way to get to know others in your community; to uncover things you have in common with your neighbors, and to recognize and understand our differences. We are honored to provide a platform for people to share true, personal stories.

We won’t have a story slam event in December – we will be putting the finishing touches on next year’s series. We’ll continue to host our monthly events on the third Tuesday of the month in 2021 – they’ll continue to be virtual until it’s safe to gather again.

It’s time for our Grand Slam!

The Grand Slam is our annual culminating event where all the winners from the season are invited back to compete for the title of Best Storyteller in York, an obnoxious trophy, and bragging rights for an entire year.

At the end of our October event, we announced the theme for this year’s Grand Slam: GIFTS.

Since we can’t host our typical event, which is usually held in the sold-out Capitol Theatre (remember packed auditoriums and theatres?!), we’re bringing the magic to you with a livestream premiere on YouTube. Watch our 11 storytellers onstage at the Capitol, and cheer them on in the chat during the event. At the end of the evening, we’ll crown a new champion.

In the meantime, you can look back on all the winning stories from this year with this handy playlist:

We have a modest fundraising goal of $1,000, and we’re already on our way to reaching it - many of the participants in our virtual story slam in April made contributions, for a total of nearly $450. These contributions will be added to our Give Local York campaign. If you’d like to make a contribution, you can do so during Give Local York on May 1.

We heard stories about second chances at life and love, major life events that provided a significant shift in perspective, stories about being given a chance and totally blowing it, and overall, quite a few tales of redemption. Phil Broder won with his story of a college English assignment that led to a big opportunity to shine.

Phil is pictured here with this month's host, Jamie Beth Cohen. Phil won an exclusive York Story Slam journal from our friends at Story Supply Co. and earned a spot in our Grand Slam in November.

Big thanks to our 2020 sponsor, KBG Injury Law, whose generous support is making this season possible and keeping ticket prices low.

The theme for our first story slam of 2020 was BEST DAY EVER and we had a packed house! We heard stories about childhood wonder, the true spirit of holidays spent with family, and overcoming and letting go. The evening ended in a tie - Corey Wolfe with the story of his participation in a fundraising gala he desperately wanted to attend and Kat Knapp sharing about a turning point in her relationship with her family.

Kat and Corey are pictured here with this month's host, Philip Given. Kat and Corey both won an exclusive York Story Slam journal from our friends at Story Supply Co. and earned spots in our Grand Slam in November.

Thanks again to the Cultural Alliance of York County for making the January event free to attendees as part of this year’s CelebrateARTS Week.

And thanks to our 2020 sponsor, KBG Injury Law, whose generous support is making this season possible and keeping ticket prices low.
