ABOUT

York Story Slam is proud to partner with York County Libraries to host storytelling workshops and story slams for teens (ages 13-18) as part of their SummerQuest summer library program.

The workshops will help you take things that have happened in your life and craft them into stories to share with a live audience. We talk about what makes a good story, how to make your story engaging, and techniques for speaking in front of people. The workshops will help get you ready to participate in your library’s story slam.

Story slams are gatherings where anyone can take a turn at the microphone and tell a TRUE story according to the following rules:

  • Story should reflect the theme of that evening

  • Story should be true to the best of your recollection

  • Should be your story - you are the/a central character

  • Story should be about five minutes long

  • No notes, no props - just you and the microphone

Each storyteller is given scores based on content and presentation. We don’t take the competition part too seriously - it’s all about having a fun night together hearing each other's stories - but the storytellers with the top scores from each library’s story slam will win a prize and a chance to compete in the teen Grand Slam.

Details about our 2021 storytelling workshops and teen story slam series will be available in early 2021. Sign up now to be notified when information is available.
